This indie world-darling side project of
James Mercer (
Shins) and
Danger Mouse (every band ever to exist) somehow falls short of expectations while also delivering 3-4 stellar pop songs. The 2 singles and maybe two additional tracks effectively combine poppy catchiness with a melancholy sophistication. The rest of the album is a murky slush of uninspired, of-the-moment indie menu-music. Two sides of a coin, so it merits a mixed grade.
